OK, so you have high blood pressure (HBP) or hypertension (HPT). What\’s the big deal? Well, both HBP and HPT basically cause damage to your blood to your blood vessels. This in time can lead to an increased risk for stroke, kidney failure, heart attacks and heart disease. These can all lead to death, that\’s the big deal. If you want to be around to raise your family and even spoil your grandkids, then you have to do something to get your HBP under control. But what can you do about it? There are basically two avenues available to treat HBP; medication and lifestyle changes.

A lot of people choose the medication approach which, at first, may seem to be the easier route. The problem is, as is the case with most medications there are some serious side effects that need to be considered. Further than that, you need a nutrition plan high in fruits, vegetables and nuts. For all those southerners out there (me included), frying vegetables such as okra and pickles is not healthy. Choose whole grain breads and pastas instead of the overly processed white breads. You should get your protein from lean meats, chicken, turkey and fish. You just need to limit the fat in your meat but you can still eat like you are human. It may cost a bit more but ground sirloin or 93% lean ground beef makes wonderful hamburgers. Basically you want food that is high in potassium, magnesium and fiber, and low fat.

Now, let\’s talk exercise. The single most important thing is to get up and get active. You don\’t need to go out day one and try to run a marathon or lift the world. Just start out at your own pace, get used to being active and then build your fitness level to where you want it to be. You main focus should be on aerobic and cardiovascular activities. These include vigorous walking, jogging, swimming, hiking or yard work. You can do pretty much any activity that makes you to breathe hard and sweat. Just push to your personally limit, and then try to go a little harder every day. You need to try to get to where you can go hard for about half an hour a day, 3 to 4 days a week. Stretching before and after is critical to avoid muscle injury and soreness. Rest days are also important to allow muscles to grow and heal. Don\’t forget, your heart is a muscle too.

What Are The Causes Of Diabetes Mellitus

When there is deficiency of insulin in a person\’s body, it creates the perfect environment for diabetes mellitus which is characterized by hyperglycemia or presence of an abnormally high level of glucose in blood. There are several causes behind diabetes mellitus, such as glucagons, hormones of the pituitary, adrenaline and thyroid which are known to be the adversaries of insulin. It can also be caused through over-production of substances which deactivate insulin, such as insulinase and insulin opponents present in plasma. Blood pressure, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, cardiovascular disease and the kidney disorder are some of the conditions which are known to favor the breeding of diabetes mellitus. In this article I will discuss the different types of diabetes that exist and how to control them.

There are generally two types of diabetes:

1. Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (also known as IDDM): This type of diabetes generally affects children or younger adults. More often than not children with family histories of diabetes usually get afflicted with this disease.

2. Non Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (also known as NIDDM): In sharp contrast to Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, Non Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus generally occur in older adults. This type of diabetes occurs when the amount of insulin produced by a person\’s pancreas is overpowered by the increasing amount of glucose levels in blood. Over time, insulin fails to control the level of blood sugar or let\’s say, the muscles become insulin-resistant. This type of disease is generally treated by administering insulin injections. Diseases such as mumps or German measles can also trigger Non Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Non Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus affects around 15 per cent of the world population. Most of the people affected by this disease are generally aged 50 or above. Obesity is one the causes for the development of this disease. Hence, one of the most effective ways to curb this type of diabetes is to lose weight by doing regular exercises and eating the recommended diet for diabetes mellitus which have low amounts of fat and carbohydrates.

In fact, diet alone can control Non Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus although there are some patients who need medical treatment as well. Patients suffering from this type of diabetes should take care not to skip any meal, and they should also eat regularly in order to prevent blood glucose levels from becoming too low. In fact, some patients are advised by doctors to eat every two or three hours in between meals.

Smoking causes a host of illnesses but clearly one of the most serious and documented is lung cancer.
