A new study in the October 1 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine reports that controlling gestational diabetes, a condition that affects a growing number of women in the US each year, may be easier and more important than first thought. Moms-to-be who develop gestational diabetes tend to have larger babies and more complicated deliveries. Their newborns are also at risk for long-term complications such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, says Mark Landon, MD, of Ohio State University Medical Center, who led the study.
